How to Measure Windows & Balconies for Blinds Correctly
A foolproof guide to measuring inside recess mounts, outside wall mounts, and balcony railing drops.
Inside Mount (Within Window Frame)
Measure the exact width inside the window frame in three places: top, middle, and bottom. Write down the narrowest measurement. Next, measure height from the top jamb down to the sill at three spots (left, center, right) and record the longest measurement.
Outside Mount (Over the Window Frame)
Measure the outer width of the window opening and add 2 to 4 inches on each side (4 to 8 inches total width) to ensure zero light leakage. For height, measure from 3 inches above the window frame down to 2 inches below the sill.
Balcony Drops & Railing Mounting
Measure from the ceiling beam or upper soffit down to the top of the balcony railing (for half-height blinds) or all the way down to the balcony floor (for full weather protection). Ensure you account for sliding door handle protrusions.
